SLEEP APNEA
How Serious Is Your Snoring??
90 Million Americans Suffer From Snoring
Snoring can be a lot more harmful than just annoying your partner--it can lead to health issues. More than half of those may have the sleep disorder Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA almost always causes loud and regular snoring, but just because you snore doesn't mean that you have OSA.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition in which your breathing is obstructed; this causes you to wake up in order to start breathing again. Regular snoring doesn't typically wake you up. To tell the difference between snoring and OSA, it is best to look for symptoms of sleep apnea: snoring, excessive daytime sleeping, feeling un-refreshed in the morning, morning headaches, stop breathing during sleep, choking or gasping during sleep, awakening with dry mouth or sore throat, impaired emtional or mental functioning, poor concentration and forgetfulness, difficulty staying asleep, type II diabetes, hypertension, overweight.
Getting screened is the first step. If you have any of the symptoms listed above you are a candidate. Sleep apnea if left untreated can have very serious effects on heart health, cognitive health, weight, and many other body systems.
